Prokaryote vs. Eukaryote?
Animal vs. Plant?
Functions of the different organelles in a cell:
Q1) Are cells the same shape? Give some examples of cell shapes and what they are.
No, cells are not of the same shape. Animal cells are different from plant cells; and within animal and plant cells are cells that posses even more variety of shapes!
Some examples of cells with different shapes:
The red blood cell is shaped like a bean.
The nerve cell is a blob, elliptical in shape, and joined to others by thin, wiry strands.
The plant cell has a rectangular block shape.
The skin cell looks like wrinkled, flattened grapes – a spherical shape with many ridges.
The bacterial (bacilli) has a rod-shaped cell, and also (cocci) has a spherical-shaped cell.
Q2) Can you name the following organelles on a diagram and briefly describe its function?:
- nucleus
- cytoplasm
- cell membrane
- mitochondria
- ribosome
I find cells quite interesting to me, and I would love to find out more about them. I’m fascinated by how so many activities can be supported by just one microscopic substance! Before this, I didn’t think there were so many varieties of cells, not to mention the organelles within those cells, and I was also clueless about what prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells were. Now, I understand briefly what these are, and also the functions of different organelles. 😀
